Formation of the Club
A meeting was held on the 7th September 1956 at the Coopernook Hotel to form a Surf Lifesaving Club at Crowdy Head.
It actually came into existence in the surfing season of 1957 - 1958
The inaugural office bearers were:
♦President - Perc Atkins
♦Secretary - Kevin Allport
♦Patron - Tom Crossingham
♦Club Captain - Fred Atkins
From the records available it would appear that the first Bronze Squad to qualify was in the season 1960 - 1961.
The Club House
The original club house was a timbered framed construction with a galvanised roof.
This building was the holiday cottage for the Communist Party Eureka Youth League and was situated at Ross Glen approximately 40 kilometres from Crowdy Head.
It was purchased for the sum of $400 by Mr Tom Crossingham, who donated it to the club.
The building was taken apart, piece by piece and transported by Tom's truck to Crowdy Head, where it was reassembled
There were no windows in the building so these were made by Ned Atkins.
The current club house was constructed in 1975 with monies supplied under the Red Scheme (a Federal Government scheme to ease unemployment). The building was officially
opened on the 16th November 1975.
On 5 July 2008 major extensions and renovations were completed and officially opened by President Rodney Chapman. The extensions were made possible after the club
received a grant through the Surf Club Facility Development Program (sponsored by SLS NSW and the Department of Sport and Recreation) and because of the hard work of
the members and the massive support of businesses throughout the local and surrounding areas.
Under the watchful eye of builder Jeff Tener, it took 18 months to complete with a band of dedicated members contributing approximately 18,000 hours of labour.
Surf Boat
The original surf boat was purchased from a Sydney Club for 10 cents.
