Director Life Saving Report
Executive Meeting 21st August 2011

The new season starts in a little over 1 month and with it brings 3 critical changes.

1/ Risk Assessment

2/ Water Safety Policy

3/ IRB driving

The driving influence behind Risk Assessment and Water Safety Policy are the out comes from the inquest into the death

of Saxon Bird at the Australian Life Saving Championships.

Risk Assessment

Prior to conducting any club activity a formalised Risk Assessment must be done. Failure to do so will leave the club

liable in the event of injury,

Water Safety Policy

All club activities in the aquatic environment must now have water safety in the numbers outline in the policy, eg if

members of the public are involved the ratio is 1 water safety to 5 participants. The policy extends to the club swim,

club training and coaching activities. The policy will be posted to the club notice board and the patrol room.

IRB Driving

A review of IRB operations has shown that the most injuries in Surf Life Saving occur in the IRB and as a result members

do not want to get involved in IRB operations because of the risk of injury. To reduce the injury toll a "Slow is Pro" policy

is being implemented. Overly aggressive driving is to be discouraged. All IRB drivers must attend a work shop in the

early part of the season in order to do their proficiency.

The Patrol Roster is near complete and a gap analysis show we only need a Spinal & Basic Beach Management course

to meet minimum Patrol requirement.

Patrol Teams over the Christmas holidays are reduced to 5 with more members on each patrol to counter "No Shows".

There will be one voluntary patrol this season - Christmas Day 1:00 - 5:00pm

After many false starts a Patrol competition will be implemented this season. The focus will be on book work, uniforms

and Patrol set up.

Surf Life Saving NSW will be providing clubs with new flags, due in early September, we will have to modify our pylons

to suit them.

Our emergency response beacon is back and ready to go.

We have not be allocated a gear inspection day yet but I am going to aim for Saturday afternoon 3/09/2011.

A Life Saving Committee meeting is being planned for Sunday 11/09/2011
